A Collaboration Years in the Making: Organic Weave x Kirsten Francis

Some collaborations happen unexpectedly. Others grow naturally over time, built on a shared appreciation for beautiful materials, thoughtful design, and the creative process. Our collaboration with New York–based interiors photographer and designer Kirsten Francis is very much the latter.

I first met Kirsten in 2020, when she photographed a new Organic Weave collection in New York. I immediately loved her eye—not only as a photographer, but in the way she approached interiors, colour, pattern, and texture. There was a natural connection between her aesthetic and what we were creating at Organic Weave.

A few years later, that connection evolved into something more.

It started with Miles

Kirsten's first rug design was a very personal one: a rug created for her son, Miles.

What began as a custom project quickly became the beginning of an ongoing creative relationship. We worked together to translate Kirsten's ideas into a handwoven rug, and the process was seamless.

To begin, Kirsten sent us her design ideas and references, and our team translated them into CAD drawings so we could see how the pattern would work as a rug. From there, we refined the scale and details, developed samples, and sent colour poms so Kirsten could see and feel the actual wool colors and textures before production.

That back-and-forth became an important part of the process. It allowed us to make decisions together at every stage—from color and texture to scale and pattern—before the rug went into production.

From custom rugs to a collection

After Miles, other custom rugs followed... A living room rug, a dining room rug and a rug for the primary! Each one evolved from Kirsten's distinctive point of view: vintage-inspired botanical motifs, geometric elements, beautiful colour combinations, and patterns that feel both collected and contemporary.

For this collaboration, we wanted to preserve that same feeling.

The resulting collection brings together four designs—Kirsten, Miles, Bloom, and The Sherwood—each woven by hand in organic wool and reflecting the character of Kirsten's work.

There is something particularly special about seeing an idea that begins as a sketch, image, or inspiration become something tactile and dimensional. A rug is not simply a pattern reproduced on a surface. The wool, weave, pile, colour, and scale all change the way a design ultimately looks and feels.

A creative process that just works

One of the things I have enjoyed most about working with Kirsten is how easy the creative process has been.

She has a very clear visual sensibility, but she is also open to the realities of translating a design into a handwoven rug. Our job is to take her vision and figure out how to make it work technically—how to achieve the right texture, how colours will read in wool, how large a pattern should be, and how everything will come together once it is woven.

The process is collaborative but uncomplicated:

Kirsten sends an idea → we create the CAD → we develop samples and colour poms → we refine the details together → and then we begin production.

There is a wonderful sense of anticipation in that process. You start with an idea on a screen and eventually receive something completely tangible that you can walk on, touch, and live with.
